Applied Agile Training

  Applied Agile Training

  • Shadow A Real "Hyper Productive" Team
  •  Apply Techniques in a Robust Simulation
  • Learn "How To" thorugh Interactive Discussion

Brief
Attendees will have a one of a kind, unique experience. Participants will be immersed into an "applied agile training environment" that allows a powerful combination of shadowing, applying and learning. Attendees will shadow a "well formed agile team", apply techniques in a robust product domain, and learn how to join and setup "well formed agile teams". This course goes beyond theory by making the theory real and allowing attendees to internalize the ideas in an applied setting. Attendees will have numerous opportunities for interactive discussions with instructors, each other and members of the shadowed team. You will not find this course elsewhere!

When was the last time an organization allowed you in to view their hyper-productive team as part of a training effort?

Why This Course and Description
This training creates an immersion experience that mixes theory, simulation and real application.

Classic IT organizations faced with growing project complexity often look to Six Sigma or similar for process improvement.  Tools such as DMAIC and SIPOC are powerful when applied to repeatable processes, but software development creates a different product with each project.  Organizations that focus on process will bring slight gains in quality, but dramatically slow product development.  Infrastructure takes longer to plan and deploy at the expense of being obsolete when finally deployed.

This 3-day highly interactive event will demonstrate Agile methods proven to gain both productivity (4X) and quality (10X).  Theory is taught in the classroom and powerfully reinforced by visits to an actual Agile software development team (in-flight on a real project) and experiences shared by instructors who have done it.  Participants will be able to see 1st hand working product backlog, observe daily stand-up synchronization meetings, and view a high-performing, collaborative Agile team in action.  The class will work through an unfolding requirements simulation, guided by vision, and grouped into small iterations so that the final outcome emerges from pieces completed just in time.  There will be two highly qualified instructors present to handle the intense interactive discussions that are necessary to learn from these experiences.

Instructors
Douglas E. Shimp is a Partner and Senior Consultant 3Back.com, a CST (Certified ScrumMaster Trainer) and a use case expert.  He has 16 years experience in the technology field. One of his distinctions is his focus on the interaction of technology and corporate cultural issues. He is currently writing a book The ProductOwner. He is certified by Cockburn and Associates to teach "Writing Effective Use Cases" and by the Scrum Alliance to teach "Advanced Development Methods" as a ScrumMaster Trainer.

In this role, he successfully implemented Agile in a mature Six Sigma IT organization. Before that, he served as a software engineer for an application development company that was under contract to the NASA Langley Research Center. He was also a research physicist for the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. His recent experiences include rapid delivery of enterprise web applications and leading the change to Agile in both large corporations and start-ups. He has over 23 years of software engineering and IT experience in several industries including DoD, NASA and Financial Services. He has published articles in several technical journals, and is currently writing a book on Agile leadership

Delivery Mechanisms

If this is delivered presented to a large audience (50+) then it would be classic presentation with light Q&A encouraged throughout.

Our preference is to break this up into small group discussions (5-7 at a table) and then shift back to larger group summary. This format allows participants to personalize the information presented with a stronger feeling of value. One presenter can orchestrate this well only for groups less than 45.

Ideal, would be to add a co-presenter for delivery. Then we would demonstrate agile behaviors through an interactive dialog and we could handle a larger number of people with small group discussion break out  and large group summary (60-70 folks with small group discussions and large group sumamry).

Groups larger than 70+ would be done via a lively interactive dialog with the  two presenters and light Q&A from the audience.
